4 Essential Ways To Save The Earth

The Earth is losing its battle against humans - animal and plant species are being wiped out daily, entire habitats are shrinking and changing, in ways we cannot predict, and the means to sustain even ourselves over the long term are becoming increasingly fragile. We know we have to act now, but what should we do and how are we going to do it?

Over the past 5 weeks The Earth Blog has been publishing individual sections of a major article outlining the fundamental methods that need to be used if we stand any chance of Giving The Earth A Future.

The complete article is now available in Adobe Acrobat print format by clicking on this link.

Please feel free to pass this article to whoever you think could benefit, or spread the word further.

The five sections are also available as blogs (backdated to allow other posts to be visible):

Part 1 : Introduction

Part 2 : Research

Part 3 : Political Action

Part 4 : Legal Action

Part 5 : Personal and Community Action

There is now a formula to save the planet. Shut down the Indian Point nuclear power plant in New York. Make a big media splash. Then sell millions of Tesla Motors cars:

We do that in 2006/2007, we're half way there!:)

But don't forget, the electricity has got to come from somewhere - if it is oil or coal generated the conversion factor is only 30-40%, which makes electric vehicles marginally effective in the fossil fuel age. Less driving and better fuel efficiency overall - now that's a start...

This morning driving through Leeds at 2-30am whilst still on duty. I looked round and could see a very large number of lights still on. Most were to advertise products and others empty office blocks. Car show rooms ablaze with lights.
When I arrived back and logged off I made my way how around 3-15am, other then myself there was little traffic on the roads yet I had to stop at a number of red lights?
Why not turn off traffic lights between these quite hours. One such set of lights is very close to my home on a cross roads outside an old mill, I am on a main road no other cars and I had to stop at a red light at these hours they should be off and return to give way policy. If we did this to all unnecessary traffic lights how much would we save in financial expenditure and how it would help reduce global warming. As I turned into my drive as always the bill board across the road still had a light on it.

Office blocks and car show rooms ect between certain hours should have to turn their lights off and have low energy lighting only for security. I have removed all my old style security lights and they have been replaced by low energy 10watt bulbs that give off the same lighting as 60 watt bulbs. Town Halls and other civic building a blaze of lights way?

I feel by all these lights being controlled we would go a long way to helping our environment. How many other cities in this country alone burn unnecessary lights.

I would not advocate turning off street lighting as this could be a safety issue, the lights I point out are just a waste a waste that needs to be controlled

Utterly sensible, Davy. The streetlights idea is being trialled in Essex, and will spread through the UK. Office buildings wasting electricity through lighting is a disgrace, and traffic lights could also work using a filter in turn system.

Thanks

It's the world of commerce, Manju. A facade of light, colour and noise to make people buy things - and the companies doing the selling care little for the impact of their activities. But while people like the light, colour and sounds, and buy things as a result, then you will only see more.

You need to tell people that they are being treated like fools who can't make their own minds up, and if that doesn't work, then find the plugs and pull them out!
